Catalog of Surveillance Systems
Compiling Obesity-Related Surveillance Systems to Build Awareness, Advance Research and Promote Obesity Prevention and Control
The National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) is developing a catalog of existing local, state, and national obesity-related monitoring systems. The purpose of the catalog is to raise researchers’ awareness and use of existing surveillance systems relevant to childhood obesity. Related to the NCCOR Registry of Measures, the catalog is expected to accelerate and improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and applicability of childhood obesity research.
The catalog will provide a foundation for:
- Monitoring obesity-related policies and environmental factors;
- Monitoring trends in relevant health behaviors, outcomes and determinants;
- Enhancing linkages among surveillance systems at varying levels of analysis; and,
- Identifying and filling gaps, as needed, in the array of available surveillance systems.
NCCOR has compiled a list of surveillance systems across each level of the socio-economic model and developed a template to capture system characteristics. In addition, the services of a web design team have been obtained and they have begun interviewing prospective end-users to identify content and layout needs.
Based on the feedback obtained from that exercise, content will be developed further, format will be decided, and an overall design will be developed.
NCCOR is a collaboration among the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to accelerate progress on reversing the epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States.
