Active Living in Rural Communities:
Measuring Rural Environments for Physical Activity Webinar

Please join us for a web-based seminar to increase the skills of researchers and practitioners in measuring rural environments for physical activity.

The webinar on Active Living in Rural Communities: Measuring Rural Environments for Physical Activity will explore the extent that modifications to active living theory, methods and interventions are necessary for use in rural communities

The webinar will begin with a brief report on three recently completed rural active living research projects and how this formative research phase informed the development of the Rural Active Living Assessment (RALA) Tools. The remaining time will be spent discussing the RALA Tools, which include three separate components: Town-Wide, Program and Policy, and Street Segment Assessments. These instruments provide a practical and simple way to assess the unique factors that are important to rural active living. Seminar participants will learn how to use these tools in their rural communities.

One of the goals of this webinar is to create a network of rural practitioners and researchers who are interested in promoting active living initiatives in rural communities. The webinar will include ample time for discussion so that participants may share other ideas, comments, and questions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe three recently completed rural active living research projects and discuss opportunities and barriers to active living in several diverse rural communities.
  • Describe how the formative research phase informed the development of the Rural Active Living Assessment (RALA) Tools.
  • Discuss the RALA Tools, including the three components, and describe how to use the RALA tools in other rural communities.
  • Discuss and identify next steps in the realm of rural active living.
