Calorie cutback: Progress report on 2010 commitment to reduce calories in the marketplace

On May 30, the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) and the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation held a webcast to review the progress of companies offering healthier options to consumers.

At a White House event in May 2010, 16 food and beverage companies stepped forward and made a commitment to reduce calories in the marketplace by 1.5 trillion by 2015, with an interim goal of a one trillion reduction by the end of 2012. This was an early commitment made to the Partnership for a Healthier America, a nonprofit founded in 2010 that is led by some of the nation’s most respected health and childhood obesity advocates. Promoting a unified message on diet and physical activity

A recent commentary published in the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention examines the advantages of using an energy-balance framework to unify diet and physical activity messages so that adults and their children are better able to understand and follow these guidelines.

Energy balance is an essential principle of weight regulation. Maintaining a healthy body weight is fundamentally a balance between the amount of food eaten and the amount of energy expended throughout the day. So, if a person eats fewer calories than he or she expends weight loss will occur. The opposite is also true; if a person’s energy intake is consistently higher than his or hers energy expenditure then the result is weight gain. Continue reading

For organizations and individuals working to address the epidemic of childhood obesity, the biggest challenge is to make it fun. Or at the very least to avoid making it humiliating, frustrating, boring, and punitive.

“We need to bring back creativity. Creativity is crucial to solving the obesity crisis,” said Chris Waugh, director and co-founder of the design innovation consultancy IDEO. Waugh spoke Friday at an event called Symposium Unplugged, sponsored by the Colorado Health Foundation. Continue reading

According to new research from Sana Chehimi, MPH, of the Prevention Institute, health claims on children’s food labels are misleading and fail to meet basic nutrient guidelines.
